▣ Redevelopment of Previously Used (Brownfield) Sites and Sustainable Campus Construction at Korea University
Korea University has actively promoted the redevelopment of previously used and underutilized (brownfield) sites as part of its campus sustainability and land-use optimization strategy. These projects transform former temporary or aged facilities and surface parking areas into new, energy-efficient, and environmentally certified academic spaces.
◆ 정운오IT교양관 신축 공사
2024년에 준공된 정운오IT교양관은 가설 건물이었던 제1실험관과 챔버실험실 등을 철거하고, 기존 정보전산처 철거 부지를 포함하여 연면적 약 5,800평 규모의 부지를 활용하여 건축되었다. 본 건물은 「녹색건축물 조성 지원법」 제16조, 「녹색건축 인증에 관한 규칙」 제11조제3항 및 「녹색건축물 조성 지원법」 제17조, 「건축물 에너지효율등급 인증 및 제로에너지건축물 인증에 관한 규칙」 제11조제3항에 근거하여 인증 기관이 발급하는 녹색건축(최우수등급) 인증과 건축물 에너지효율등급(1⁺등급) 인증을 받았다(인증 기간은 2035년 7월 7일까지).
◆ Jeong Un-oh IT Liberal Arts Hall (Completed 2024)
This new building was constructed on a previously developed site that had included demolished temporary buildings such as the First Laboratory Building, Chamber Laboratory, and the former Information and Computing Center. The redevelopment converted the underused brownfield land into a modern facility with a total floor area of approximately 19,200 m² (≈ 5,800 pyeong).
The building achieved the Green Building Certification (Highest Grade) and Building Energy Efficiency Grade 1⁺ Certification under the Green Building Creation Support Act and relevant regulations, valid until July 7, 2035, demonstrating Korea University’s adherence to sustainable construction standards.
◆ 인문관 신축 공사
인문계 지역에는 옛 홍보관 부지를 활용하여 인문관 신축이 진행 중이다. 본 건물은 지속가능한 건축 방법을 적용하여 지하 2층, 지상 3층에 연면적 2,101평 규모로 건축될 예정이며, 강의실과 교수 연구실, 행정 및 부속 공간으로 구성된다. 2024년 9월에 환경영향평가(환경보전방안검토 14차)를 실시하였으며, 2025년 5월 개교 120주년에 맞추어 준공할 예정이다. 인문관 신축으로 문과대학의 부족한 공간 인프라를 확충하고, 쾌적한 강의 환경과 융합 연구 환경을 제공할 것으로 기대된다.
◆ Humanities Hall (New Construction on Former Public Relations Center Site)
Currently under construction, this project redevelops a previously built institutional site into a sustainable academic facility consisting of two basement levels and three above-ground floors, with a total area of 6,940 m² (≈ 2,101 pyeong).
An Environmental Impact Assessment (Environmental Preservation Plan Review No. 14) was completed in September 2024, and the building will be completed by May 2025, coinciding with the University’s 120th anniversary. This project exemplifies responsible urban land reuse and the improvement of learning environments through sustainable design.
◆ 자연계 중앙광장 공사
2024년 현재, 자연계 캠퍼스 애기능 남쪽의 지상 주차장의 용도와 구조를 변경하여 스터디 라운지, 강의실, 다목적홀 등 전 구성원이 함께 사용할 수 있는 복합 공간을 조성하는 공사가 진행 중이다. 본 사업은 지하 3층, 지상 1층에 연면적 11,363평 규모로 추진되고 있으며, 보행 중심의 열린 캠퍼스 조성을 목표로 한다. 2024년 9월에 인문관 신축 공사와 함께 서울특별시 환경영향평가 조례 및 시행규칙에 의거하여 환경보전방안검토를 실시하였다.
◆ Science Campus Central Plaza Redevelopment
On the south side of the Science Campus (Aegineung area), a ground-level parking lot—a typical previously developed brownfield site—is being redeveloped into a multifunctional educational complex including study lounges, lecture rooms, and a multipurpose hall.
The project (three basement levels and one above-ground floor; total area 37,570 m² ≈ 11,363 pyeong) aims to create a pedestrian-friendly and open campus. In September 2024, an Environmental Preservation Plan Review was conducted in accordance with the Seoul Metropolitan Government Ordinance on Environmental Impact Assessment, confirming compliance with local sustainable development regulations.
